Unfortunately, babies don't come into this world equipped with a guide called, "How to Raise This Child." Granted, experienced grandparents are often close at hand to help out, and there are plenty of books published every year on this subject by qualified child psychologists. Some of these books are excellent. Still, new parents who try to follow their advice to the letter often find themselves in a quandary, because every baby, every child, and every teenager is not like any other. Every individual is unique, for better or for worse, and no matter how many siblings, children, nieces, nephews, and grandchildren – or, in the case of psychologists, patients – any person has experienced, none will be exactly like any other. Every mother or father develops his or her own unique parenting style, which, like everything else, has its ups and its downs. Your astrological sign reveals what kind of parent you tend to be, whether you favor punishment over reasoning - indeed, whether you believe in discipline at all. Below is a quick guide to your parenting strengths and weaknesses by Sun sign. And remember, there’s an advantage in getting to know your child through his or her astrological makeup. ARIES: (March 20 - April 18) As a parent, you tend to be impulsive, and you aren’t always the most patient in the world. When a child misbehaves, your reaction tends to be loud and angry. Depending on the child’s transgression, this may be absolutely appropriate, but usually patience and explanations are preferable. TAURUS: (April 19 - May 19) Taurus parents are more patient and more likely to sit down and talk to their children than to yell at them. Yet they also tend to be rather set in their ways, with fixed points of view, and they aren’t always as flexible as they should be. Thus, they tend to treat of all their children in the exact same way. GEMINI: (May 20 - June 20) Gemini is the Peter Pan of the Zodiac. Never having completely grown up yourself, you want to pals with your kid. It’s difficult for you to assert yourself and to be an authority figure when the necessity arises. Yet trying to be both buddy and judge and jury can be confusing for the children. Balance is the keyword here. CANCER: (June 21 - July 21) Cancer is the sign that traditionally rules motherhood, and Crabs tend to be loving, understanding, and devoted to their children’s well-being. Yet you may have a tendency to live through your children and to be too dependent on them for emotional support. Remember: You are the parent. LEO: (July 22 - August 21) Provided they’re not overbearing, Leos often make the best parents, because in many ways they are still children at heart. They love spoiling and playing with their children and hate disciplining them. When they must exercise authority, it really does hurt the Leo parent more than it does the child. VIRGOS: (August 22 - September 22) Virgo parents can be sticklers for following the rules. They mean well, but aren’t always careful to face each distinct situation in an appropriate manner. The worst thing that Virgo parents can do is to criticize their kids rather than encourage them. Too much disparagement promotes insecurity. A little praise goes a long way. LIBRA: (September 23 - October 22) As a Libra, you go out of your way to be fair. But in an emotionally charged situation, this can’t be easy. It’s important to remember to stay calm and to be as tactful and diplomatic as the situation allows – and to hear what the child has to say. Although they are children, they may have some valid points. SCORPIO: (October 23 - November 21) Even in the best of times, you can be overwhelming for your child. But when tension arises, you can be downright frightening. Scorpios must remember to show their gentle side, even when disciplining their children. Otherwise the children may be too frightened to come to their parents when they need them the most. SAGITTARIUS: (November 22 - December 20) You may need to slow down and really listen to what your child is saying. All too often, Archers assume that their children want to do the same things that they do. Yet a quiet child may feel overwhelmed in large groups, and an artistic child may not want to swim on the local team. Ask before assuming anything. CAPRICORN: (December 21 - January 18) Capricorns are traditionalists and, as parents, often assume that the best way to rear their kids is to take the same approach as their parents and grandparents did before them. Yet the times have changed. In today's world, children mature faster in many ways than their parents did. Adjustments in the old-fashioned ways are vital. AQUARIUS: (January 19 - February 17) Cerebral Aquarius tends to intellectualize everything. It’s appropriate to try to be objective, but sometimes a little emotion or intuition is just what you need to shed light on a situation, whether it involves a child who hates homework or a teenager who’s running with the wrong crowd. Appeal to the burgeoning adult within both. PISCES: (February 18 - March 19) Fishes can be the ultimate adoring parents, lavishing affection on their children and giving them a lot of breaks. But the Pisces parent sometimes resorts to playing the martyr and tries to manipulate the kids by crying, "After all I’ve done for you!" This only creates resentment. Give appropriately but unconditionally to your child – and he or she will do the same for you. |
